Front row, left to right: Hastings track coach Ryan Mahoney, Andrew Plunkett, grandparents Harold and Sandy Plunkett.<\/span><span class=\"credit\">Jardyn Angell\/The Journal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Mancos senior Andrew Plunkett signed a letter of intent with Hastings College on Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Plunkett will compete on the track and field team for the NAIA school in Hastings, Nebraska, in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Plunkett started communicating with the program over the summer and first visited the campus last month.<\/p>\n<p>While he was also considering attending Northern Arizona University for its physical therapy program, he leapt at the opportunity to compete in track at the college level, and plans to major in pre-physical therapy at Hastings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first heard from coach Mahoney and he said I could run track, I was ecstatic,\u201d Plunkett said.<\/p>\n<p>He also felt right at home at the school with under 2,000 students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kind of liked the small college feel, because that\u2019s what I\u2019m used to here,\u201d he continued. \u201cSo that\u2019s what made me lean towards them more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Broncos head coach Ryan Mahoney joined Plunkett on Wednesday and spoke about the recruiting process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met with him and really liked his drive,\u201d Mahoney said. \u201cI really like multi-sport athletes. I come from a high school background, so I put a lot of emphasis on somebody that is just a good all-around athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019ll fit in really well with what we\u2019re looking to do,\u201d he continued. \u201cI think that between high jump and triple jump we\u2019ll just see where he clicks.
