Sixty-six students took on an assignment to build a wooden toy each to be given as Christmas gifts for the students at the Teddy Bear Preschool just down the road.<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave them the challenge, and they responded really well,\u201d Gallagher said. \u201cIt\u2019s part of our community service project.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students from advanced furniture\/cabinet building, and the construction class built the toys.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are a lot of cars, trucks, some helicopters, a stick-horse, games, birdhouses \u2013 I left it wide open,\u201d Gallagher said. \u201cThey had to research how to build them, design them to scale, and then build them on a deadline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students found the assignment challenging and rewarding.<\/p>\n

Junior Devin Reed made a redwood puzzle and two cars.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaking toys is pretty hard, there is a lot of planning and you can\u2019t be off by much or it won\u2019t look good,\u201d he said. \u201cMeasuring out the puzzle and cutting it so it all fit together was fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senior Jalen Balderrama made a tractor, toy cars, and is working on a tank.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the small details that makes it fun,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are really intricate to make. It\u2019s really cool to give back to the little kids.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said a key thing to remember for first-time toy builders is to not get too fancy.<\/p>\n

\u201cStick to the basics, and don\u2019t get too complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sophomore Brett Lewis had the innovative idea to build a bowling ball and pins set.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s fully functional and sized for a little kid,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d never seen one hand-crafted before, so I thought I\u2019d make one. It turned out pretty well.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Thursday, the gifts were given to preschoolers. Gallagher hopes the toy-making project will become a tradition.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a lesson to give back, and get in the spirit of the holidays,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
