Doc\u2019s Outdoor Sports and Recreation has transitioned from boat rentals at its new McPhee marina to renting snowmobiles in Dolores.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m the doctor of fun,\u201d says owner Stan Folsom. \u201cIf you\u2019re feeling down, snowmobiling through the woods in the powder will put you in a good mood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Folsom has six high-performance snow machines available for rent from his shop at 100. S. 11th Street in Dolores.<\/p>\n

Rates are $375 for two machines and a two-sled trailer for eight hours, or $700 for four machines and a four-sled trailer for eight hours.<\/p>\n

For safety, Folsom won\u2019t rent out just one snowmobile unless it\u2019s clear the person will be going out with another snowmobiler or a group. You must be 21 years of age with a credit card to rent snowmobiles. Helmets are included.<\/p>\n

Doc recommends renters ride the Boggy Draw area or the Dolores-Norwood Road beginning at the gas pumping station. The road is straight forward, and has convenient snowfields to explore.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great way to experience the backcountry, and amazing how much ground you can cover,\u201d he said. \u201cThey handle well in powder conditions, and I\u2019ve seen a lot of elk out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Folsom offers guiding services on private land only for $75 per day. He\u2019s working to arrange package deals that include overnight cabin stays on private land with lots of snowmobile terrain.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re a lot of fun and powerful,\u201d said employee Chad Damron. \u201cFor beginners, take it slow, get a feel for the machine, and pay attention. Look out for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Yamahas and Arctic Cats range from 2008 to 2011 models, are easy to operate, handle well and have good suspension, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have been receptive, I rented them all out quite a lot already,\u201d Folsom said. \u201cThe conditions this year are good, and hopefully there\u2019s more snow to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
