{"id":107319,"date":"2016-01-06T21:12:46","date_gmt":"2016-01-07T04:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/the-front-page-4\/"},"modified":"2016-01-06T21:12:46","modified_gmt":"2016-01-07T04:12:46","slug":"the-front-page-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/the-front-page-4\/","title":{"rendered":"The Front Page"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>School board to discuss solar heat<\/p>\n<p>Great Western Solar heat will present a report to the Mancos Board of Education on the feasibility of installing a solar heating system in the Junior High School at the Board meeting to be held on Monday, Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Junior High All-Purpose Room.<\/p>\n<p>Along with the discussion on a solar hearing, Superintendent Julio Archuleta will seek permission to apply for federal and state energy conservation grants to improve the heating efficiency of the district\u2019s facilities by adding insulation, double-pane windows, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting will open with the roll call, minutes, bills and reading of communications and visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Archuleta will present a report on the completion of the remodeling project at the High School and the releasing of final payments to the contractors on that project. Removal of a power pole on school property will also be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Reports will be heard from the school improvement committee,and discussion is scheduled on a legal workshop for board members and school administrators.<\/p>\n<p>Superintendent Julio Archuleta\u2019s contract will also be discussed.<\/p>\n<p>Letter to the Editor<\/p>\n<p>What happened to the TV Guide that was in the paper? We do think the paper is better now, but could still have more of our local news.<\/p>\n<p>Nell Lewis<\/p>\n<p>Roberta Henes earns 4.0 at CSU<\/p>\n<p>Roberta Lynne Henes of Dolores was one of the 486 Colorado State university undergraduates who earned a 4.0 (A) grade point average during the fall semester.<\/p>\n<p>The students, each carrying 12 credit hours or more, are enrolled in CSU\u2019s nine colleges.<\/p>\n<p>Hits posts<\/p>\n<p>Swerving to avoid a deer on U.S. 160 three miles east of Mancos Thursday night, a car driven by Stuart Stroud of Cortez went off the road and hit a post, it was reported to State Trooper Joe Ynostoza.<\/p>\n<p>About Our Neighbors<\/p>\n<p>The Dolores Star carried a section on \u201cDolores \u2013 40 Years Ago.\u201d In this section, taken from the pages of The Dolores Star, Friday, Jan. 8, 1943 the following articles were printed, concerning Mancos and Mancos people:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDouglas Noland of Mancos will receive a specially embossed gold watch for making the highest score in the county in the national 4-H meat animal contest, Extension Agent Karl Parker announced. The boy is 16 years old and has completed six years in club work. His leader is Mark Wilden. Doug was unlucky in the state contest but plans to give them a closer run next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another article reads: \u201cMcPhee has a new crew of log cutters from Mancos working at the Glade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Holloway selected to \u201cWho\u2019s Who\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John S. Holloway, from Mancos and a fulltime Fort Lewis College student, has been selected to the \u201cWho\u2019s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students were selected on the basis of academic achievement, community service, leadership in extra-curricular activities and future potential.<\/p>\n<p>Mancos Valley Ass\u2019n hears talk<\/p>\n<p>Advertising, and what it means to Mancos, was the main topic of last Thursday\u2019s Mancos Valley Association meeting at the Hamburger Haven. Foster Allenbaugh, editor of the Mancos Times-Tribune, discussed the cost of publishing the newspaper and a TV Guide.<\/p>\n<p>Ellen Holston also spoke on the importance of advertising:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all use it,\u201d she said, \u201cbusiness, to attract customers; individuals, to compare products and prices; and possibly most important of all, to obtain necessary services. Years ago, we wanted a bank, with the thought that if people cashed their checks, they would shop here. Then we wanted a doctor. Today, we have two of the best, plus a fine dentist.
