Sue Klebold said that her desire to fix her son\u2019 s problems might have harmed her communication with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur children say \u2018I don\u2019 t like how I look,\u2019 and we say, \u2018Oh no, you look great,\u2019\u201d Klebold said. \u201cBut instead, we should say \u2018tell me more about that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She said it is much more important to try to listen as children and teens share their thoughts.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019 t try to fix your children \u2013 try to draw them out.\u201d Klebold said in an interview with Rocky Mountain PBS News that will air Friday night. \u201cWhen the tragedy first happened, I was really in a state of denial. I couldn\u2019 t believe that he did those things people were saying that he did \u2013 I thought he had been tricked, something had gone wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

She says that it was months later when she saw evidence from police investigators that she \u201creally got to see Dylan the way others had seen him during this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

As she worked with mental health experts and evaluated the journals and websites where Dylan and Eric Harris, the other killer, detailed their deadly plans, she said: \u201cI could see for Dylan, he just wanted his life to be over and I think that was his main motivator.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe real challenge is knowing when a change in behavior could be life threatening,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to distinguish between normal adolescent behavior and when someone is really struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n

She is donating the book\u2019 s proceeds to mental health research.<\/p>\n

Coni Sanders, whose father, Dave Sanders, was a teacher at Columbine and among those killed, said, \u201cIt\u2019s not natural to suspect these kinds of horrifying acts \u2013 we don\u2019 t look for it, why would we?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sanders runs her own counseling and assessment private practice, where she works with adults undergoing court-ordered mental health treatment for violent crimes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wondered from the first moments what happened to those boys,\u201d Sanders said in an interview with Rocky Mountain PBS News, referring to Harris and Klebold. \u201cIt felt shameful to wonder what happened to them, since my father was murdered and the whole nation was at a standstill.\u201d<\/p>\n

But that question stayed with her throughout her studies, and guides her in the work she does now as a mental health care provider. \u201cIt bothers me that we have to have such a horror before mental health becomes a priority,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cWhy are we focusing on first responders \u2013 and not pre-responders?\u201d<\/p>\n
