The Montezuma-Cortez girls\u2019 tennis team split contests with Fruita Monument and Cedaredge last weekend to move to 2-3 on the season.<\/p>\n
On Friday in Fruita, the Lady Panthers were nearly swept, falling 6-1 to the Wildcats.<\/p>\n
Number three singles player Laurel Chappell provided the bright spot for the Panthers, defeating Mia Maynard, 6-4, 7-5.<\/p>\n
Number one singles player Raquel Lucero dropped her first match of the season, 2-6, 0-6 and No. 2 Skye Cole fell 3-6, 0-6.<\/p>\n
The Wildcats swept the doubles matches.<\/p>\n
Ashley Moore and Kristin Pierce fell, 0-6, 0-6; Angel Veach and Andria Battle lost, 0-6, 1-6; Jennifer Sturman and Courtney Kocourek dropped their contest, 0-6, 1-6 and Kayla Hageman and Aubre Rice fell, 0-6, 0-6.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think against Fruita, we could\u2019ve played better,\u201d said head coach Catherine Anliker. \u201cThey were a really tough team, but I don\u2019t think we played to the best of our ability in that one. But I talked to the girls about that and they came out Saturday morning a lot better looking and more competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Lady Panthers also saw more positive results on Saturday in Cedaredge, as they took down the Bruins, 4-3.<\/p>\n
Lucero (6-3, 6-2), Cole (6-2, 6-1) and Chappell (6-1, 6-0) swept the singles matches, and Moore and Pierce won the only doubles match for the Panthers, 6-0, 7-5.<\/p>\n
Veach and Battle (6-4, 6-3), Sturman and Kocourek (6-2, 6-1) and Hageman and Rice (6-1, 6-4) all battled, but came up short in their doubles matches.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
