Crow Canyon Archaeological Center<\/a> has received the equivalent of a lifetime achievement award for its educational programs.<\/p>\n

The Special Achievement Award was given for the center\u2019s \u201c32 years of educational achievement and outstanding public engagement,\u201d the Professional Register of Archaeologists said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s been a long awareness of our contributions teaching the value of archaeology,\u201d Crow Canyon communications specialist Suzy Meyer said, \u201cand the value of understanding the past.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Professional Register of Archaeologists works to achieve universal standards and maintain high professional conduct in the field.<\/p>\n

Crow Canyon provides archaeological education to students and adults from across the country as well as conducting significant research into the ancestral Puebloans. In recent years, the center\u2019s work has been featured on the PBS programs \u201cTime Team America\u201d with the \u201cLost Pueblo Village\u201d episode and the Colorado Experience \u2013 \u201cLiving West: Water.\u201d The center\u2019s archaeologists also have been featured speakers at the Field Museum in Chicago and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re gearing up for the next season as soon as it dries out,\u201d Meyer said.<\/p>\n

Among the groups coming in will be fourth-graders from Durango School District 9-R. They will stay in new student cabins, which are replacing dormitories in the lodge, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey enable us to give the chaperones more privacy and more security for the students they\u2019re responsible for,\u201d Meyer said. \u201cAnd the bathrooms are more modern.\u201d<\/p>\n

The upcoming dig season includes projects at three new Basketmaker III sites, dating circa AD 500 to 750.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe only have remote sensing data so far,\u201d she said, \u201cbut there appear to be single habitations at the sites.\u201d<\/p>\n
