It\u2019s no secret that Americans are bad at geography, but readers were reminded again Monday when USA Today mistakenly highlighted Wyoming on a map instead of Colorado.<\/p>\n

The article, \u201cWhen Smuggling Colo. Pot, Not Even the Sky\u2019s the Limit,\u201d explored the methods used to sneak drugs out of the state to drug markets all over the country.<\/p>\n

Yet the article has caught more notoriety for the graphic.<\/p>\n

\u201cAuthorities say they\u2019ve intercepted thousands of shipments of marijuana leaving Colorado, destined for sale on the black market in other states,\u201d reads the graphic information.<\/p>\n

Yet in deep blue, with drugs routes traced from Maine to California to Florida, is Colorado\u2019s neighbor to the north.<\/p>\n

Twitter, needless to say, had a field day.<\/p>\n

\u201c@USATODAY can\u2019t tell which state is Colorado & which is Wyoming. What are you guys smoking?\u201d posted Mermaids 4 Marijuana.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongrats, Colorado! According to USA Today, you are actually Wyoming. #facepalm,\u201d posted History Prof Brad.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe funny part is that\u2019s not even the obvious mistake,\u201d posted Michael Cargrill. A bullet point incorrectly spelled marijuana.<\/p>\n

USA Today did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

Michael Blonigen, however, a Natrona County District Attorney in Casper, Wyoming, was a bit taken aback this morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw that article, and I was wondering if they had the wrong state,\u201d he said. \u201cDid they mean Colorado?\u201d<\/p>\n

Blonigen said Wyoming has its share of drug-trafficking problems, but that\u2019s mostly from illegal substances smuggled from Colorado.<\/p>\n

\u201cColorado is just a stopping point for a lot of drugs in Wyoming,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s really because of the geography. Whether it\u2019s legal or illegal we have a lot of drugs coming through Colorado. It\u2019s not unusual at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

USA Today, a Gannett newspaper, eventually corrected the graphic \u2013 but not before dozens of screen shots of the original were plastered on social media.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
