The event will take place at the same time \u2013 6:30 p.m. \u2013 in the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. Doors open at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>A suicide survivor who jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge will share his story in Durango next week.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Hines jumped in 2000 after he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It was a decision he instantly regretted, and since then, he has become a nationally recognized activist for mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Lewis College Student Wellness Coordinator Kendra Gallegos Reichle and two other students saw Hines speak at a conference last year, a few months after FLC graduate <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/149806-family-friends-remember-kindness-of-mat-exchange-founder\">Giancarlo Vigil<\/a> died by suicide. In the months after Vigil\u2019s death, it seemed like suicide was constantly in the news, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe timing was pretty intense,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><div class=\"naviga-social-embed\">&lt;![CDATA[\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>This evening I learned that First Gentleman Marlon Reis and I have tested positive for COVID-19. We are both asymptomatic, feeling well, and will continue to isolate at home. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ttzxi72ThC\">pic.twitter.com\/Ttzxi72ThC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Jared Polis (@GovofCO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovofCO\/status\/1332871208916795392?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">November 29, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\"><\/script><br>\n]]&gt;<\/p><\/div>\n\n<p>They said Hines\u2019 message would resonate with Durango residents and decided to bring him to town through Fort Lewis College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortlewis.edu\/studentwellness\/WellPAC.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wellness Peer Advisory Council<\/a>, or WellPAC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that Kevin speaks our community\u2019s language. One of his main messages \u2013 \u2018It\u2019s OK to not be OK, but it\u2019s not OK not to ask for help\u2019 \u2013 is powerful and life changing,\u201d said Veronica Krupnick, another student who saw Hines speak last year and who helped organize his local appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Gallegos Reichle hopes Hines\u2019 message will help the community be more open about suicide and mental health and inspire attendees to support others in the community.<\/p>\n<p>Many people experience thoughts of suicide and hopelessness or know someone with similar struggles. A community conversation can help normalize that struggle for others, who may not be seeking counseling, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all think that awareness is crucial,\u201d Gallegos Reichle said of mental health. \u201cWe have to talk about it and break away from the stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>WellPAC, which is funded by student fees, provides a holistic approach to health and wellness on campus. But Hines\u2019 speech will be open to the greater community because suicide is a widespread problem, Gallegos Reichle said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want people to walk away with hope,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Krupnick didn\u2019t think it would be possible to bring Hines to town but found a wide variety of organizations, including some not directly involved with health, that were willing to sponsor the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think no matter who you are, you can learn something from him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about Hines, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kevinhinesstory.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kevinhinesstory.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\"><a href=\"mailto:mshinn@durangoherald.com\">mshinn@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"naviga-scoreboard\">\n<h4 class=\"scoreboard-title\">If you go<\/h4>\n<p>Kevin Hines, suicide survivor and author of Cracked, Not Broken: Surviving and Thriving After a Suicide Attempt, will talk about his experience and how he overcame mental illness at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Drive.<br>\n                The event is free and open to all.
