A movie about the 1925 diphtheria epidemic in Nome, Alaska, and the subsequent serum run by dog sled team was filmed in Silverton last spring.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Great Race\u201d is scheduled to be released in October and is one of about five movies shot in the area over the last year.<\/p>\n

The recent surge in film-making in Silverton is embraced by the community, said DeAnne Gallegos, executive director of the Silverton Chamber of Commerce.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are primarily a tourist town, but our goal is to diversify our economy,\u201d she said. \u201cLow-hanging fruit for us is recruiting business like movies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gallegos described Silverton as a \u201cturn-key set\u201d that attracts filmmakers because of its versatility.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they need a mountain scene or a Victorian town scene, we really open our arms to it,\u201d she said. \u201cWe haven\u2019t had the complete facelift as some of our neighbors. We are still true and raw to that time period; there is no fa\u00e7ade.\u201d<\/p>\n

The film industry provides an economic boost for Silverton\u2019s economy, especially during the difficult shoulder season, and an opportunity for locals to get in on the action.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have locals out there working side by side with these movie crews,\u201d Gallegos said. \u201cWe open up our houses and businesses, and create friendships to make this a positive experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winter scenes for \u201cThe Bay House,\u201d a movie about a politician losing an election in the wake of scandal, finished filming in Silverton over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Upcoming film projects in Silverton include \u201cFreak Power,\u201d a movie about Hunter S. Thompson\u2019s 1970 campaign for Pitkin County Sheriff and \u201cThe Ballad of Buster Scruggs,\u201d a Coen brothers Western Netflix series.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a different source of income for our town,\u201d Gallegos said.<\/p>\n
