Gun control. When do we want it? Now,\u201d while carrying homemade signs decrying school violence.<\/p>\n<p>Some students wore orange in honor of Francisco \u201cPaco\u201d Fernandez and Casey Marquez, the students killed in the Aztec High School shooting on Dec. 7, 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The walkout was largely organized on social media, said Annie Heinicke, 13, a student at Miller Middle School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is more important than school,\u201d Heinicke said. \u201cWe want to be planning our graduation, not our funerals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many students expressed frustration over the lack of support from teachers and school administrators.<\/p>\n<p>They said teachers discourage them from talking about politics in school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeachers make it look like they are trying to make a change, but they aren\u2019t letting students talk,\u201d said Miller student Iliana Garcia, 14.<\/p>\n<p>Heinicke said teachers told students not to come back to class if they left because they would be given an unexcused absence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not marching because we want to skip class,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are marching because we are the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The students said some teachers at Miller Middle School mock their activism and tear down any homemade signs hung up around the school protesting gun violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeachers told us we couldn\u2019t make signs,\u201d Heinicke said. \u201cThey were ripping up our signs in front of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Durango School District 9-R spokeswoman Julie Popp said she had not heard about teachers tearing down signs, but all signs have to be approved before being displayed in the schools.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, students called for efforts to ban semi-automatic weapons often used in mass shootings and for mental health to be discussed in schools.<\/p>\n<p>Miller student Mia Ciotti, 14, said health classes rarely cover the topic of mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am no expert on mental health, but I am quite certain sadness and depression are not the same thing,\u201d she said. \u201cBut they grouped them together in a class one time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Popp said parents can check students back into school any time throughout the day, but students leaving class are marked absent.<\/p>\n<p>Some students were somber, while others were visibly angry.<\/p>\n<p>They said kids are taking matters into their own hands, and they have no intention to stop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey underestimate us because of our age,\u201d said Raya Helfrich, 14.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"mwc_shirttail\"><a href=\"mailto:mrupani@durangoherald.com\">mrupani@durangoherald.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>express frustration over lack of support from adults<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":100275,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5736,5735],"tags":[592,1086,150,2410],"naviga_topic":[],"class_list":["post-100274","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-local-news","category-news","tag-durango-high-school","tag-durango-school-district-9-r","tag-firearms","tag-miller-middle-school"],"acf":[],"author_name":"dh_admin","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100274","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=100274"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/100274\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/100275"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=100274"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=100274"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=100274"},{"taxonomy":"naviga_topic","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/dh.durangoherald.com\/tj\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/naviga_topic?post=100274"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
