Cory Gardner has criticized his colleagues on the Foreign Relations Committee for their \u201chypocrisy\u201d as they prepare for a vote this week to move CIA Director Mike Pompeo\u2019s nomination to be secretary of state to the Senate floor.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=18067c91-ad15-4108-9296-42e114bf0694&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=18067c91-ad15-4108-9296-42e114bf0694&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=18067c91-ad15-4108-9296-42e114bf0694&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=18067c91-ad15-4108-9296-42e114bf0694&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" alt=\"Pompeo\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Pompeo<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>Pompeo has seen his prospects falter since his confirmation hearing last week as two Republican senators, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Jeff Flake of Arizona, threaten to join Democrats in voting against him in a committee vote Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who voted for Director Pompeo to be CIA director has said he\u2019s done everything he\u2019d thought he\u2019d do at CIA. He\u2019s been a good director, and he does not regret his vote,\u201d Gardner said in his Senate office Thursday morning. \u201cBut he\u2019s going to vote against him for secretary of state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., hasn\u2019t announced how he\u2019ll vote. He voted against Pompeo for CIA director and said in a statement last week that he has concerns about Pompeo\u2019s \u201ctemperament and independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gardner also pushed back against colleagues on the committee who expressed concern about a lack of diversity at the CIA.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"wp-block-image naviga-inline-image naviga-align-left alignleft\" data-naviga-align=\"left\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=816e162d-19de-4bc1-a130-086e6afdb2e4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=2000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=816e162d-19de-4bc1-a130-086e6afdb2e4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=800 800w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=816e162d-19de-4bc1-a130-086e6afdb2e4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1200 1200w, https:\/\/imengine.public.prod.dur.navigacloud.com\/?uuid=816e162d-19de-4bc1-a130-086e6afdb2e4&amp;function=cover&amp;type=preview&amp;source=false&amp;width=1800 1800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 2000px\" width=\"368\" height=\"498\" alt=\"Gardner\" class=\"naviga-image\" loading=\"lazy\"><figcaption><span class=\"caption\">Gardner<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><p>\u201cYou have others now who have complained about the environment at the CIA,\u201d Gardner said. \u201cYet he made it clear that the complaints submitted by the no fear complaint system have decreased by 40 percent in the time that he\u2019s been there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pompeo was confirmed as CIA director by the Senate in 2017 on a 66-32 vote with 14 Democrats voting in favor. This week, key senior Foreign Relations Committee Democrats, Kaine and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, announced they would vote against Pompeo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where I think the hypocrisy of the place is very telling,\u201d Gardner said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Senate historian, no secretary of state nominee has received an unfavorable committee vote going back to 1925. All previous committee votes for Cabinet members were held in closed session.<\/p>\n<p>An unfavorable committee vote would be a major setback for Pompeo\u2019s confirmation but wouldn\u2019t sink it. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., could bring Pompeo straight to the Senate floor regardless of whether the committee recommended the nomination.<\/p>\n<p>Gardner said the president\u2019s nominees should be voted on, but he wouldn\u2019t directly answer if he supported such a move by McConnell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust as President Obama was entitled to nominees, even if I disagreed with them, President Trump has his nominees that should be voted on,\u201d Gardner said. \u201cI voted against Loretta Lynch\u2019s nomination, but I voted for cloture because I thought President Obama deserved that vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gardner also supports Pompeo because their views align on North Korea, both agreeing that the North Korean nuclear program poses the biggest threat to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Gardner, chairman of the subcommittee on East Asia, is a leading voice in the Senate on North Korean policy.<\/p>\n<p>Pompeo secretly met with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un over Easter weekend.
