Fire destroys camper in south Cortez

Two blocks closed as crews fight blaze

A camper caught fire behind a residence on Chestnut Street south of Seventh Street about 6:45 p.m. Friday. Cortez Fire Protection District crews responded and put it out by 7:15 p.m. There were no injuries, but the camper was destroyed. The fire's cause is under investigation, officials said. Two blocks of South Chestnut Street were closed as crews fought the fire and neighbors came out to watch.
