Montezuma-CortezMorgan Short brought home the Lady Panthers’ sole first-place finish at the Aztec Invitational last weekend with a 15-8.75 leap in the long jump, and she also finished second in the 200 (27.64).

Tayla Topaha took second in the discus with her best throw of the season (113-6), Trinity McCain finished third in the 400 (1:06.27) and Emma Thissen (2:36.45) and Kristine Candelaria (31-6) took eighth in the 800 and shot put, respectively.

Coby Baer led the M-CHS boys team with a first-place finish in the long jump (20-11.75), while Elisha Vaquera finished sixth (19-3).

Vaquera also took second in the 400 (53.00), Josh Ramos was second in the 800 (2:05.60) and Skyler Yarbrough’s 5-4 high jump was good for eighth place.

The Panthers only sent a few competitors to Bayfield on Wednesday, but they had great results.

Weslie Kirks won the 100-meter hurdles (16.58) and finished third in the triple jump (30-7.5), while Short finished fifth in the long jump (14-8.5) and Candelaria was sixth in the shot put (28-9).

Baer led the boys again, this time finishing second in the long jump (19-9.5), with Vaquera taking fourth (19-1.25). And then Yarbrough took fifth in the high jump (5-1) and Austin Wagner finished seventh in the triple jump (36-2).

MANCOSSeniors Ro Paschal and Andrew Plunkett led the Blue Jays at Aztec last weekend.

Paschal won the 800 (2:03.90) and finished third in the 1,600 (4:36.56), while Plunkett finished third in both the high jump (5-8) and triple jump (40-3.5) and also took eighth in the long jump (19-1).

The Lady Blue Jays’ individual placers were Kaylee Rose, who finished fifth in the 800 (2:35.04) and Emma Most, who was eighth in the 1,600 (6:24.71).

On Wednesday in Bayfield, the Blue Jays’ only first-place finish came from the 4×8 team of Paschal, Hernandez, Simon Kearns and Caleb Yoder (8:42.78).

Individually, Paschal took third in the 400 (53.15) and Christensen finished eighth (57.79), Hernandez was third in the 300-hurdles (46.42), Kearns was fifth in the 800 (2:17.09), Teslin Stecher (5:30.64) and Asa Kearns (5:33.54) were fifth and sixth in the 1,600 and Griff Huver finished sixth in the 100 (12.14) and seventh in the long jump (19-0.25).

The Lady Jays were led by third-place finishes by Most in the 1,600 (6:25.04) and the 4×2 team of Cole, Gutierrez, Ericka Peacock and Morgan Rose (2:07.35).

Most also placed fifth in the 800 (2:55.31), Skinner (6:48.24) and Mimi Archuleta (7:21.74) took sixth and seventh in the 1,600 and Faith Asnicar was eighth in the shot (27-0).

DOLORESAlthough Dolores missed out on the finals of the Aztec Invitational on Saturday due to its prom being held on the same day, the Bears still had a handful of athletes qualify for finals on Friday.

For the Lady Bears, Aryelle Wright qualified for the finals in the 100 (13.86), 200 (28.02) and 400 (1:02.59). And then Larissa Umberger (18.22) and Shavargus Noyes (18.25) each qualified for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles, and Sierra Schwartz qualified in the 300-hurdles (52.17).

Shavargus Noyes finished fourth in the high jump (4-6) and Larissa Umberger was eighth in the long jump (14-8.5) to lead in field events.

The Dolores boys were led by Ruben Gomez’ fifth-place finish in the long jump (19-3.5) and by Cael McHenry and Tristen Medina in hurdle races.

McHenry (17.49) and Medina (17.74) each qualified for finals in the 110-meter hurdles, and Medina finished ninth (43.49) in the 300-hurdles after preliminaries, while McHenry was 14th (45.53).

The Lady Bears cleaned house in the relay races in Bayfield on Wednesday.

The 4×2 team of Wright, Umberger, Nichole Kibel and Cameron Elder (1:54.81) and the 800-meter sprint medley team of Wright, Kibel, Schwartz and Noyes (1:59.98) each finished in first place, and the 4×1 team of Wright, Umberger, Kibel and Schwartz finished second (53.48).

Individually, Umberger took second in the long jump (14-11.25) and third in the 100-hurdles (18.11), Schwartz finished fifth in the 100-hurdles (18.89) and third in the 300’s (55.03) and Noyes was third in the high jump (4-5) and fifth in the triple jump (28-11.75).

McHenry led the boys with a first-place finish in the 110-hurdles (17.57) and fourth place finish in the 300’s (46.87), Skieler Grooms was sixth in the 200 (25.53) and McHenry, Grooms, Medina and Forest Pejsa took third in the 4×2 (1:40.07) and sixth in the 4×1 (48.85).

DOVE CREEKSpencer Gatlin was the lone Bulldog to place in the top eight at the Aztec Invitational – finishing seventh in the shot put (39-7) – but Madilyn and Mikayla Hankins came close for the Lady Bulldogs.

Madilyn was seventh (54.46) in the 300-hurdles after preliminaries, but did not run in the finals, and was 13th (19.40) in the 100 hurdles after prelims.

In final standings, Mikayla finished 14th in the discus (81-9) and 24th in the shot (25-9).

Dove Creek did not attend the Pine River Invitational.
