I have a suggestion for all the residents of La Plata County who hand out their hard-earned money to sign-holders in our community. If you really want to help those in need, consider donating your dollars to local social service organizations like Manna soup kitchen, Southwest Safehouse or Axis Health System. That way, you know your money will help people in need, rather than possibly going toward cigarettes, alcohol or drugs.
With all the available jobs in our community, we should not be encouraging people to beg, but rather forcing them to actually work for their money like the rest of us! A hand up is the right approach, not always giving a handout! There are more people begging than ever before, so it is time to change direction. Stop enabling lazy people, make them become self-sufficient.
