A concrete barrier along the Cascade Creek hairpin turn of U.S. Highway 550 north of Purgatory Resort is nearing completion. The Colorado Department of Transportation installed the barrier after several recent truck crashes. The barrier will help keep trucks from leaving the road and ending up down the embankment and in the creek or spilling their contents. The 470-foot long barrier is a little over 4 feet tall, 2 feet wide at the base and 1 foot wide at the top. The wall includes 7½ tons of rebar and is tied into 2 feet of concrete buried in the ground to keep the wall from tipping over when it gets hit. (Jerry McBride/Durango Herald)
