In the United States, most of the non-native people came here to escape situations of poverty in their home country, including all four of my own grandparents. Some of our citizens were also forcibly brought here through the slave trade.
The suffering and joys of these people are carried deep within most of us who now live in this country today. Compassion and kindness are always the right response to those who are faced with a similar plight today.
