Michael Hawkins’ hit his peak a week early.

Hawkins broke the Bayfield High School record in the shot put last weekend at the Intermountain League Championships with a 50-foot, 5-inch throw – a mark that would’ve landed him a silver medal Friday at the CHSAA Class 3A Track and Field State Championships.

Instead, Hawkins threw 45-7 to take seventh in Lakewood, still a mean feat considering his shredded and separating nonthrowing shoulder, slated for surgery next month.

Alex Hill of Ellicott won with a 52-2 hurl.

Bayfield’s TJ Pazell took 17th with a 40-0.25 mark.

The BHS boys 4×100-meter relay snuck into the finals, taking ninth in 44.97 seconds, less than two seconds slower than the top qualifying time – Coal Ridge in 43.38.

The girls 4×100 team didn’t have quite the same luck, missing qualifying by two spots with an 11th-place 52.34.

In the pole vault, Trista Hooley scored points for Bayfield, clearing 8 feet even to take seventh place. Teammate Brittany Hunter cleared 7-6 to tie for ninth, Katie Hawkins also cleared 7-6 to tie for 12th, and Morgan Allred cleared 7 to tie for 15th.
