Hoping to celebrate Earth Day in style this year? You’re in luck. The Durango Earth Day calendar is chalked full of educational and entertaining events.
Festivities begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a “Procession of the Species” parade from the corner of Main Avenue and College Drive to Buckley Park. Participants are encouraged to dress up as a favorite plant or animal, or carry an Earth Day poster inspired by this year’s theme, “Invest in our planet.”
The celebration will continue at Buckley Park at 11 a.m.

Performance by Ballet Folklorico (11:15 a.m.)
An official welcome and awards for best costumes and entries (11:30 a.m.)
Music with DJ Rasta Stevie and iAM music student bands (1:30 p.m.)
Booths to visit with nonprofits, sustainable businesses and government agencies and learn about sustainability, climate action and/or social justice.
Workshops at Buckley Park
The Natural Step: 4 Principles for making sustainable decisions at work and home with local author, Darcy Hitchcock, (11:30 a.m.)
What is Sustainable Investing with Drea Pressley, Edward Jones, (Noon)
Biking tips for kids of all ages with Joe Hanrahan, Durango Cyclery, (12:30 p.m.)
Climate/immigration/social justice connection with Enrique Orozco, Compañeros, (1 p.m.)
Food Justice with Rachel Landis of the Good Food Collective, (1:30 p.m.)
In addition, Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency will host an Earth Day electric vehicle ride and drive event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Attendees will be able to test drive electric vehicles, learn from current EV owners, and see a new luxury EV from Lucid Motors.
Other events
April 22: Join Durango Trails for a kick off trail work event in Horse Gulch from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. The event includes instruction, safety talk, tools and lunch. Sign up is required and can be found on the Durango Trails website.
April 23: SOIL Lab work party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Garden (2900 Mesa Avenue in Durango). Volunteers will be able to sign up for 2½-hour shifts or stay all day.
April 28-30: Bike Swap at Chapman Hill held by Durango Devo.
