Ignacio First Fridays will kick off from 5 to 8 p.m. today with arts-focused, family-friendly events at participating venues up and down Goddard Avenue (Highway 172).

Designed to encourage cross-cultural activities and learning opportunities, Ignacio First Fridays will continue on the first Friday of each month. Details are posted as they become available at IgnacioArtsScene.com.

A sampling of activities at the inaugural event include a performance by the rap group The Council, dancers of Los Colores de Ignacio, a bluegrass jam and a screening of the PBS documentary “Art 21: Art in the 21st Century.”

Ignacio First Fridays is a project of the new Ignacio Arts Council. The Council is exploring classes and workshops, and performance and exhibit opportunities in the visual, literary and performing arts, including drama and film.

Open Studios Tour & Art Sale extends invitation to artists

Artists are invited to be part of the fifth annual Durango Open Studios Tour & Art Sale, scheduled for Oct. 19 and 20 in Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio.

Durango Arts Center to host online exhibits

Durango Arts Center will showcase member artists in rotating online exhibitions. All artists who are current members of Durango Arts Center, professional and amateur, and all art media will be considered in this call for entries.

Media ranging from photography, wall sculpture, fabric, mixed media and all paintings and drawings are eligible.

An online gallery of a maximum of 25 works will be available at www. DurangoArts.org for a period of three months. Artist groups also are invited to apply.

Submission deadline is Wednesday. The selected artist will be represented on DAC’s website until mid-August.

Library branch to host summer reading program

The Fort Lewis Mesa Branch of the Durango Public Library will host a Summer Reading Program for kids with activities from June 11 through July 30.

Deadline July 1 to apply for Local Authors Fair

The Durango Public Library invites local authors to apply for inclusion in its Local Authors Fair to be held Sept. 28.

This event is a chance to interact with the community, network with fellow literary artists and promote work.

This event is part of the fourth annual Durango Public Library Literary Festival (Sept. 27-28), featuring New York Times bestselling author C.J. Box.

Museum to offer Native American art classes

Classes with Native American artists will be offered beginning Monday at Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum in Ignacio.

The classes are free and open to the public. Registration is open until slots are filled. Priority goes to children and adolescents.
