The Durango Arts Center’s “A Neil Simon Summer” opened Thursday and will continue through Aug. 31. The musical “They’re Playing Our Song” will play Thursdays and Saturdays and the comedy “Plaza Suite” will run Fridays beginning July 5.

“They’re Playing our Song” was nominated for a Tony Award for best musical and a Drama Desk Award for outstanding musical. Winner of the Tony Award for best direction of a play and a Tony nomination for best play, “Plaza Suite” won a Tony for best direction of a play and was nominated for best play.

Artist Stephen Day to make Durango return

Sorrel Sky Gallery will host New Mexico landscape artist Stephen Day from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Because of Day’s popularity, there will be a preshow sale.

Day grew up in Santa Fe, Durango and Aspen and attended Durango High School. He lives in Taos, N.M., and is renowned throughout the Southwest for his paintings of sunsets and mountain vistas.

Among his high-profile clients, Hyatt Regency hotels placed prints of “Approaching Spring” in 500 hotel rooms, and the Colorado Rockies purchased three paintings for the Coors Field Pinnacle Room.

Day’s paintings may be presold before the July 4 event but will be held for the opening. Day will attend the reception at 828 Main Ave.

Sacred Arts Festival invites contributors

The eighth annual Sacred Arts Festival will be held in September and October. Artists are invited to submit original poetry, works of art, craft or photography and original songs and compositions expressing the sacred, representing any faith tradition.

The 2013 festival will include several Day of the Dead/Día de los Muertos-themed activities toward the end of October. Works in the art exhibit may use this theme or not, as the artist sees fit.

The festival will be hosted by 3rd Ave. Arts and held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave. The submission deadline for poetry and music is Sept. 3; artwork drop-off and deadline for receipt of shipped artwork is Sept. 20.
