Applications for Conservatory Music in the Mountains will be accepted through June 1. The Conservatory summer music program will run from July 7 through 28 at Fort Lewis College and provide educational and performance opportunities for young artists.

String and piano students will study with world-class faculty and members of the Music in the Mountains Festival orchestra.

Theater professor to speak at gallery

The Fort Lewis College Theatre Department will present its second Theatrically Speaking event at 6 p.m. Monday at Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave.

New York-based playwright and FLC Visiting Professor of Theatre Danny Mitarotondo will present readings and discussion from his playwrighting class.

The event is free, and the public is invited to share in the discussion.

Multischool concert Tuesday at Concert Hall

The inaugural School Music Extravaganza will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. The free concert will feature more than 250 student musicians from Bayfield Elementary, St. Columba, Miller Middle School, Escalante Middle School, Durango High School and the Fort Lewis College Jazz Ensemble.

Each school will perform individually, and the evening will conclude with a grand finale of all students together on stage.

Autumn Arts Festival open to all artists

Artists are invited to apply for inclusion in the Durango Arts Center’s 19th annual Durango Autumn Arts Festival, to be held Sept. 21 and 22 on East Second Avenue.

The festival will include 80 juried artist booths with cash and gift-certificate awards and a complimentary artists’ dinner. An estimated 4,000 people are expected to attend the two-day event.

Calligrapher to exhibit at Mancos Town Gallery

Beth Wheeler will open a new show, “My Roots: An Artful Journey,” at 5 p.m. today at the Mancos Town Gallery in the Visitors Center on Bauer Avenue at Boyle Park.

Wheeler recently spent several weeks abroad in Germany and England to enhance her studies of calligraphy. She will show new works and photographs from her studies in Europe.

There will be refreshments and music at the reception. The show will remain on display through May 18.

Photography club has new meeting place

The next meeting of the Durango Photography Club will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Banquet Room at the Holiday Inn & Suites, 21636 Highway 160 West.

Linda Pampinella, a Bayfield photographer and co-owner of The Fifth Corner Photo Gallery in Durango, will present “Mount, Mat and Frame Your Own Photographs.”

After a short break, the second half of the meeting will be spent critiquing photographs submitted by members and guests, keeping in theme with a monthly challenge.
